Mine Safety Fact:  In one blasting case involving a fatal misfire, the FMSHRC went so far as to increase the $135,000 civil penalty assessed to the mine operator by MSHA to $180,000. In addition to injuries that can result from unplanned detonations of explosives, blasting can also present flyrock hazards as well as health hazards associated with air contaminants including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides and various other blast by-products.
