Mine Safety Fact:  Mines are often first adopters of new communication technologies.  Surface mines use a combination of wireless radio systems, including 2-way radio, radio trunking, cellular systems, and GPS to track and manage fleets of mining vehicles and to communicate with miners. Underground mines use distributed antenna systems, known as leaky feeders, and ultra low frequencies, known as PEDs, to allow miners to communicate with each other and equipment.
