Mine Safety Fact:  On September 23, 2001, 12 miners were killed by an explosion in an underground coal mine as they were attempting to rescue a miner who was injured and immobilized by an earlier explosion.   As a result of the incident, MSHA published two new standards concerning emergency evacuations and mine emergency evacuation and firefighting program of instruction.
