Mine Safety Fact:  Canaries were once regularly used to monitor the coal mine environment.  Gases such as carbon monoxide and methane in the mine would affect the bird and cause it to stop singing.  When the singing stopped, miners knew that dangerous gases had accumulated to hazardous levels.  Canaries were used in British mines as recently as 1986.
